The incident, suspected to be a ransomware attack, impacted key card systems, locking guests out of their rooms and causing disruptions to slot machines. While the company is actively investigating with external cybersecurity experts and law enforcement, its websites remain offline. Security experts see signs of a ransomware attack, given the widespread outages, but other possibilities, such as a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack or an advanced persistent threat (APT) group, are not ruled out. The recovery process is now in the hands of MGM Resorts’ security teams.
